my "I hate mosquitos with every bone in my body" garden

For those of you who don't know how many bites I can accumulate in a single hour from mosquitos... well it's a lot.  Lately, they have somehow managed to sneak into our bedroom and bite both of us while we sleep.

Losing sleep to a strange hum in your ears and then itching yourself to death is misery.

So I did a little research to find out what kind of plants they DON'T like.
Marigolds.
Lavender.
Peppermint.
Chives (garlic).
and Cat Nip!

Although, I have no purchased my Cat Nip yet... and I haven't finished planting all my plants.  I'm excited to be potting and planting my little garden on our balcony.   This is my first garden :)  I feel so domestic.

I love most of the plants that mosquitos supposedly hate.  Makes me happy.  I'm excited to read my book and drink coffee upstairs with Jay.

love.

I didn't know you could eat beet greens... I've been throwing them away for a long ass time :(

sets of people and counting

In my finite math class last semester we learned about combinations (nCr) and permutations (nPr). order mattering or not.  how many options can we get out of choosing 3 out of group of 10.  This is one of my favorite things I learned to do this year.

if the order doesn't matter then it's:
nCr = 10C3 = 10! / (10-3)! 3!= 10! / 7! 3! = 10 * 9* 8* 7! / 7! 3*2*1 = 120
if the order does matter then it's:
nPr = 10P3 = 10! / (10-3)! = 10! / 7! = 10*9*8*7! / 7! = 720

This weekend was a little like doing math.  We had a group of people... how many people were going to push the buttons of the other people in the group.  I picked 3 in the equations I did before because that's about right.  And our little group fluctuated somewhere from 5 to 30.  Mostly couples so even numbers of people.  Here and there, one or two that were not in couples... anyways our group was about 10-ish.

I was thinking that my little math equations kind of related to how many ways there could be to possibly get yourself riled up and upset.  How many events / actions / words could come out of our little group.  I just kept doing all this equations in my head all weekend.  The more they happened the more the odds increased against me.  Spinning off into a "crazy-drunken-already-losing-streak" that I thought would make me feel better...

Anyways, I drank too much humiliated myself.  Got so angry with everything and freaked out like a baby without words.  Yep.  So yes by the end of the night I was one of the people I picked into my equation.  The one that made it more difficult.

In math class we also learned to add and multiply the combinations and permutations together as well. In our case making the situations worse.  Adding on top of what was already happening.

* AHHHHH SIGH *

Funny how math can finally apply to life.

come to this... go to that

recently i've been feeling like i've stretched myself thin.  coming and going and living out of my bags... home seems to be a distant feeling.  even there i'm stressed over little things.  stressed about what's happening next week... what i need to buy next.  where is the money coming and going to?  there are so many people getting married and having kids in my life now and truly i am not ready to be there yet.  in some ways i am jealous that these people i know are able to be ready and make those commitments.

lots of things go into the process of getting married now though.  the better the friend the more the effort you'll have to put into it.  not like you're a bridesmaid and you're obligated through a direct role, but there are so many events. maybe i need to just take a step back and not be involved.  but i hope that the day i'm ready to jump these same people will be here for me.

however on another note.  what about these lifelong friends, the ones you've put the effort into before you even knew what that meant.  all of sudden they forget to call you... you're unimportant now.  they have someone else...whether it's a new best friend or boyfriend or girlfriend.  remember when you always thought that they would be the one on your side on your big day?  now i don't even know when they are in town.  i don't know... it's all just kind of lame.

Spending time in LG

My mom turned... well something in her late 50's this week (she won't tell me). I decided to go down to the south bay and spend and few days at "home."
Talked about school stuff / family / vegetables / cats... the list kind of keeps going. It used to be that when I came home I was pretty much out of the house the whole time. Now, I find myself spending more and more time in with the family (although I do wonder if it's because I have fewer friends down here now or if it's by choice sometimes). :/

Either way, spending the last few days of my spring break down here has been relaxing. I got to see Traci (who I haven't seen for 2 years...which is the last time I visited Utah). She just moved out to Monterey, which is only an an hour & 1/2 from my parents really. We went to Santana Row and did a little shopping. It was an amazing afternoon, so sunny and not too hot. Just nice to be able to spend some time with a friend.

Unity day finally passed, and it was an awesome day. I felt like it was the end of my snowboard season. Last year I think we did a few days after it, but I'm not sure we'll do it again this year. I'm feeling a little beach fever coming on, and I'm hating my goggle tan. I actually tried to spray tan half my face the other day to get rid of it.

Every year on this day I think about my first day @ King George in VT. How miserable and sad I was. Knowing that I would not see anyone I knew in California for at least 3 months. Being across the country in a town that had a post office located in someone's garage and snowbanks that were 8 feet tall. It's been 10 years since I was there. It's funny because I was so relieved to get away from my family then, I missed my friends that I left behind. Those friends (for the most part) are long gone, and I have hardly spoken to any of them since I left for VT 10 years ago. My family has changed drastically, and now we're back in Los Gatos on the other side of town. Kind of funny how it works out...

May is going to be a crazy month of fun (and finals). Hopefully I'll have some fun things to post. :)

While hanging out on the balcony... I put my arm down looking over the edge and found out that after the rain the entire walk way is covered in these little guys. Gross.
